Understanding Facebook AI, And How to Stay Safe from Scams

Updated: Sep 3

If you’ve been online recently, you’ve probably seen the headlines about “Facebook AI.” It’s real, but so are the scams that have started popping up around it. At Moon+Stone Studio, I want to help clear up the confusion and protect you from falling victim to misleading ads or fraudulent messages.

What Facebook AI Actually Is

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has launched its own AI chatbot. You’ll find it built directly into Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. If you’re using AI inside these apps, it’s legitimate , no extra downloads required.

Where the Scams Come In

Unfortunately, scammers are quick to take advantage of new technology. Here are a few red flags to watch for:
• AI-generated images or posts that look almost right, but feel “off” or too perfect.
• Fake celebrity endorsements linking to giveaways or investment opportunities.
• Ads for AI downloads or tools, these are often malware disguised as something useful.
• Overly personal or emotional chatbots asking for sensitive information.
• Messages with multiple links. The first link may actually take you to a real Facebook/Meta page (like Business Guidelines) to gain your trust. But the second link, the one they push you to click to “avoid account deletion”, has nothing to do with Facebook or Meta. That’s the scam.

How to Protect Yourself

Here are some simple ways to stay safe online:
• Only use Meta AI directly inside Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp.
• Double-check every link before clicking. If the URL doesn’t clearly end with facebook.com or meta.com, don’t open it.
• Avoid suspicious ads, downloads, or too-good-to-be-true offers.
• Report any fake or misleading content you see.
• Secure your accounts with strong passwords and two-factor authentication.
